Overview
Showcasing world-class service
At the beginning of 2024, Bon Secours Health System, Ireland’s largest independent hospital group, reached out to Kooba to engage in a full digital redesign process. Bon Secours had identified several limitations with their existing web solution, and these were shared with the Kooba design team from the outset. The Bon Secours website needed to cater for a wide range of users, including patients, visitors, healthcare professionals and job candidates. As such, it featured over 5000 pages, and lacked the navigation features necessary to make the large volume of content accessible and discoverable. The majority of the website’s users were visiting from mobile devices, which the existing design was not suited for, and this was causing a range of user experience issues. As such, the redesign process set out to address these significant issues.

Mobile-first design
Kooba’s initial UX research revealed that 75% of the Bon Secours website’s traffic was derived from mobile devices, and as such improving the mobile user experience was immediately set as a priority for the project. By adopting a mobile-first design process, Kooba prioritised mobile users, and built a fully responsive and flexible website that could function across a full range of devices and screen sizes. Through a logical and efficient frontend build Kooba also managed to dramatically reduce loading times on mobile devices, and improve performance metrics and usability for mobile users.

Informative architecture
Kooba began the Bon Secours project with a methodical approach, identifying and researching a range of personas who would be interacting with the final website. The information architecture of the website was made according to these typical users and their predicted behaviour and needs. This included designing specialised landing pages for patients, visitors and healthcare professionals. This user-centric approach to the site’s layout ensured that a wide variety of users could easily access the information that was most relevant to them. It was also essential that key information could be quickly found across the site, and to address this a robust, filterable consultant directory was introduced, offering up-to-date details on specialties, availability, and costs, alongside enhanced search functionality for quick access to services and referrals.

Accessible healthcare
Given the wide range of users visiting the Bon Secours website, and the status of Bon Secours as a leading Irish healthcare provider, it was seen as essential that the website be made according to the highest accessibility standards possible. Kooba incorporated accessibility considerations throughout the design and development process, ensuring that the entire visual brand and site architecture was easily accessible for disabled users and assistive technologies. This also provided carry-over benefits to the overall user experience, with a more universal and functional design helping to connect every user with relevant information in a streamlined and efficient manner.
